As part of the quite wonderful 10th edition of the Sonic Protest Festival, Emmanuel Rébus and myself entertained and educated the visitors of the festival's Let's Get Physical-part - à La Générale, Paris XI - with, on and about the phys-icality of sound. Emmanuel did part 2, on Monday April 7th. I did part 1 on the day before that, Sunday April 6th.
Here is the abstract...
sound is felt by us to be by far the most volatile, slippery and elusive among carriers of information.
Sound continuously acts in a present that no longer is, moving from a point that was to a point that yet has to be-come.
and therefore music a fortiori - never simply IS.
(Also, it never is simple.)
Sound – and hence a fortiori music - always BE-COMES.
on the other hand: there is NO SOUND without MATTER.
There is no-thing that is as physical as is sound.

There’s sound(s) as soon and only if matter moves...

sound is a sequence of waves of pressure that propagates through compressible media.
sound & music move matter.
Which in turn ... moves us ...
of the techniques of sound recording, sound has become more physical encore.
Recording has reified sound.
Sounds became objects that we can touch and hold in our hands, as
